What happens if the computer is on and the USB cable gets dipped in water?

Will the computer fry? Just turn off? Maybe nothing happens?
I would like to know what happens if a connected USB cable gets dipped in water.

If just the end of the cable (i.e. the plug) gets dipped in water, nothing will happen if it's not very salty water.

The voltage of an USB connection is 5V. You can't possibly short circuit 5V by dipping the end of the cable in water.

That's why nothing will happen.

If an USB powered device falls into the water, well, that's a different story altogether. What destroys a device when it falls into water are the following things:

* The level of isolation between very small and sensible electronic parts is less than in air. Electrons flow through the water and across the circuit board causing damage all across the circuit board.

* Displays stop working because they run on really low voltages or high frequencies. If there is moisture around, the drivers which make the low voltages or high frequencies break - usually a thermal death.

* Water causes some hygroscopic electronic parts to become wet and thus they are unable to perform the intended function.

A simple cable, however, won't care whether it's wet or dry.
